I just love big companies - This article about HP doing the opposite of outsourcing caught my eye because this subject came up a few weeks ago with several HP people independently from each other. I just love the exercise in extremes - apparently Carly was “offshore everything!”, but the new CIO that was brought in from Dell is all “bring it all back to Houston”.

Just interesting that, at least at face value, everything seems so black and white to people. Either centralize or decentralize. Nothing in the middle.

I, for one, believe that decentralizing fosters greater chaos AND innovation, whereas centralizing affords better control but stifles. I refuse to believe that these two can’t be juggled together - but that’s the way behemoths need to act I guess.

And what’s the deal with shifting all the data centers to the US? What’s wrong with geo-locating data farms for better performance? 84 data centers is a bit extreme - but 6 data centers and ALL in the US is a bit extreme too…
